Madhushala by Harivansh Rai Bachchan
Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s glorious book Madhushala is a collection of mystically woven 135 quatrains. Madhushala, meaning ‘The House of Wine’, includes brilliant compilation of ballads that portray the various dimensions of life with the use of words like wine (madhu), house of wine (madhushala) and cup-bearer (saaki). The quatrain style of writing could be compared with the Urdu style ‘Ruba’i and has been inspired by Omar Khayyam’s literary piece ‘Ruba’iyat’.
The poems voice about the facets of human life like love, greed, anguish and resentment. As a reader proceeds with each page of the book, he/she gets to know the beautiful ways in which wine has been used as a metaphor to convey the prismatic reflection of life. Bachchan also openly spoke about the blind way of living in society and the sorrow it brings to the life of a common man. Through Madhushala, Bachchan touches one or the other sensitive aspects of every single person’s life. Madhushala has been considered a must read for those who are in quest for the best Hindi poems.

Rashmi Rathi

Rashmi Rathi is a classical work by the celebrated writer Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. In this beautiful poetic rendition, the book traces the story of the brave warrior Karna, the first-born son of Kunti. As Kunti disowns her son, Karna grows up in a humble family and emerges as one of the greatest warriors ever. His best friend Duryodhana, recognising his virtues, makes him a king, which obliges Karna to fight for the Kauravas against his own brothers.
The book is a beautiful interpretation of the classical Mahabharata that tells the story of emotions, courage, honour, and pride. Rashmi Rathi was published by Lokbharti Prakashan in 2009 and is available in paperback.

Gitanjali: Rabindranath Tagore

Containing an assortment of one hundred and three poems, Gitanjali: Rabindranath Tagore is an English translation of various poems and works of the legendary Indian poet Shri Rabindranath Tagore. Translated by Tagore himself, the book contains fifty-three translated poems from the original Bengali version of Gitanjali: Rabindranath Tagore, as well as fifty other poems from eight of his other works on poetry and a drama titled Achalayatan.
An integration of two words, ‘Git’ and ‘Anjali,’ meaning song and offering respectively, the literal meaning of the word is ‘offering of songs.’ and because of the strong devotional tone and subliminal spiritual incitation, the book can be said to have devotion to god as its theme. It highlights the poet’s intense response to the magnificence of the universe or rather an affirmation of life with all its abundance, mystery and diversity.
