Matrices addition of two square matrices we will observe here. In the last post you have seen the types of matrices, Operations of matrices and in the earlier one post we had discussed about the equal matrices.

Matrices Addition

Addition of two matrices depends on the dimensions of the matrics. For an example you can add only 2 x 2 and 2 x 2 order matrics. Here, you have observed the order of the matrices. This is same for both the matrices.

But what? If the order of the matrices are not same.

Let us check about these points, in terms of mathematical results.

What we have observed from the above example ?

We have observed that the sum of two matrices is a result of new matrix. We had just added the corresponding elements.

Like in the first column and first row; 8+4 =12

first colum and second row for both A and B =7+2=9

Similarly for the third row and first colum, this is the sum of 2 +7=9

We can say that addition of matrices is possible only when both the matrices are of same dimensions or orders.

matrices addition with different orders

In the above example we have observed , we faced the problem to add the number in third column. Yes! True this is not possible.

The question mark in the matrix is the mark of confusion. Matrices addition possible only when the dimensions are same.

The above examples of the matrices are with simple number but here can be any integer or any constant.

 Conclusion

  1. For the addition of matrices, both matrices should be of equal order
  2. Only those elements you can add that are at the same position
