G20- 2nd Agriculture Working Group Meeting-2023 at Chandigarh

The group 20 (G20) countries representatives are visiting the city beautiful Chandigarh for the 2nd Agricultural Deputies Meeting of Agriculture Working Group (AWG), from 29th to 31st March 2023. In this event delegates from 19 member countries, 10 invited countries and 10 international organizations will participate.

“Speaking about the upcoming event, Ritesh Chauhan Joint Secretary (IC), Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said, “The second Agricultural Deputies Meeting of AWG is an important platform for countries to come together and discuss ways to ensure sustainable agriculture, food security and nutrition. We are honored to host the event in Chandigarh and look forward to fruitful discussions.”

The Union Territory of Chandigarh is located in the foothills of the Shivalik hill ranges in the north, of India.

The theme of India’s G20 Presidency is “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth · One Family · One Future”. “The theme reflect the value of all life human, animal, plant, and microorganisms – and their interconnectedness on the planet Earth and in the wider universe.”

In addition to the regular International Organisations (UN, IMF, WB, WHO, WTO, ILO, FSB and OECD) and Chairs of Regional Organisations (AU, AUDA-NEPAD and ASEAN), India, as G20 Presidency, will be inviting ISA, CDRI and ADB as Guest IOs.

What is G20?

It is a forum for international economic cooperation. The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom, and United States) and European Union.

What is its role?

It plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.

Which country hold the current Presidency role?

India holds the Presidency of the G20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023.

When this group (G20) was formed?

The G20 was founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a forum for the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors to discuss global economic and financial issues.

Why this group G20 is significant in overall development?

The G20 members represent around 85% of the global GDP, over 75% of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

Does G20 Presidency is a permanent position?

No, the G20 Summit is held annually, under the leadership of a rotating Presidency.
