Research Integrity: An Online Discussion about Factors that Influence it

eminent researcher, ethics in research, integrity of research, research ethics, rsearcher

Research for a reason creates a passion to do something new in the researchers’ life. You can create it with your interests only. You know, research Integrity is characterized by the researchers and their associated Institutions, primarily it is the Institutions’ responsibility to make some standards of the quality research and frequently assess the individual research.

Research Integrity

I have focused here on the research integrity, for that two factors given below are important;

  1. Research Ethics, and
  2. Peer Review

In this video, we had discussed many points related to the Research Ethics and Peer-review practices. Some questions that are part of this video are listed below. I am sure this question-answer session about the research integrity will help you.

How Ethics and values are the needs of Research Integrity?

When we talk about research ethics it is basically a systematic and authentic approach for the research objectives presentations. The collection of data and its presentations in terms of the research article.

You should watch this video if you are new to the research, or going to join the research career.

The questions related to research integrity are;

The researchers are publishing similar work with little extension in different journals, to increase the number of publications. How will this kind of activity make research sustainable to the researchers and its significance in the present?

Research Papers Publications through international conferences is a short-cut and easy route. What will be the impact of such papers on developing countries’ researchers, in terms of if they cite and get inspired to do further similar research? [I have observed that most papers in general, remain of primary and lower stage researchers].

Research Symposiums

Earlier traditional symposiums were helpful to the young researchers to provide feedback on their latest unpublished research work, (so-called preprint review in today’s time; through a poster or oral presentations). Nowadays, people send published works and present to symposiums. Is this practice good for the publicity of the work or should we adopt the old model of symposiums?

In any above cases, regular researchers publish many abstracts with slight changes in the text, in the symposium proceedings. How reputed societies’ editorial board members can control such malpractices?

Research Supervisor and Ph.D. Work Objectives

The established researchers work on specific research problems, they observe the problems in ongoing research work and assign the task to the Ph.D. scholars. Before giving the problem they train scholars for similar work, judge their outcomes,(involving in experiments/simulations, etc.), and then assign the problems. Scholars learn in systematic ways.

But on the other hand, many Ph.D. aspirants are not able to get such opportunities and facilities. Those fellows approach the so-called supervisors and tell them their own interests, etc. Now, these supervisors haven’t defined problems and they ask the scholars to search the problem in their own area of interest. Scholars spent maximum time on such things, no clear objectives, no methodologies, trends of the current research, etc.

I feel our system is not so strong where PG students can define the research problem objectives. Actually, the problem starts from here, because they joined and paid high fees for Ph.D. Now, they want to publish the research articles at any cost to get their Ph.D.

Similarity Index Interpretation in Publications

So, I feel if objectives and methodologies are clear to one scholar then they will learn more and will not create ethics problems. Can we control such practices, what is your opinion about this problem?

At present, no doubt research data (text, images, values, etc.) has also increased in multifold ways, compared to the early times, so whatever you will explain/write similar words will match with your content in a specific domain. Now, the question is how to judge the original content?
